This procedure involves the consultant radiologist taking a tissue sample from the area of abnormality picked up on clinical exam or on mammogram/ ultrasound.
Two types of biopsy are commonly performed namely:
- Ultrasound guidance (using ultrasound) or
- Stereotactic (using mammogram guidance).
The consultant pathologist will determine if the tissue sample is benign or malignant.
The majority of biopsies are benign and do not turn out to be cancerous and these results can provide peace of mind.
